This is the Solstice challenge and starts in the Bulford/Tidworth area.
The route usually follows the military roads, but every now and then shoots off into those woods, little copses you always wanted to go in but couldn’t ‘cos the range staff/wardens were watching you. The bit that I enjoy most is being able to go into Collingbourne woods, where we have to follow narrow, single track pathways, dodging the trees.
In the past there’s even been, the nearest thing you can get to, a wall of death, and if timed right, i.e. no cyclists around, this is most enjoyable. There’s also the opportunity to go up and over Sidbury hill (the one near the Army chalk pit area you can see from miles around that has the chalky tracks going over it), which is usually highly restricted to all of the public not just vehicles.
And of course you get some nearly out of date sandwiches and crisps as a freebie lunch…
