Bob Taberner Review in "The Folk Mag"
The Mighty Rooster : ’Red Room’
"The letter that came with this CD introduced The Mighty Rooster as a West Country band who have supported the likes of the Albion Band and Osibisa and are looking to work some festivals next year. On the evidence of this CD, they should get that break. Some of the larger festivals would do well to include this band which fits comfortably in the folk/indie niche also occupied by the Oyster Band and the Levellers.
Their third album has 11 songs and two instrumental tracks mainly composed either by vocalist Steve Heath or guitarist Pete Baker, which have good strong melodies and thoughtful lyrics. As a folkie, I liked the fact that the words came over clearly, but then that’s hardly surprising considering Steve Heath’s big voice. Pete Baker supplies tasteful guitar work, Mike Varty doubles on keyboards and particularly shines with his fiddle work, and the rhythm section of Simon Clarke (bass) and Dean Creighton (drums) underpin some very well worked out arrangements. This is a class band that we’re going to hear and see more of."
Cheers Bob!
